Finding the Perfect & Best Dog Name
When it comes to naming a new puppy, it might be harder than at first thought…to start with, there are literally thousands of possibilities, from traditional to completely quirky and ‘out there’ dog names that nobody else has ever heard of…how do you choose a shortlist? Do you base it on the breed? Personality? Looks? Colour? Do you let the kids have a say?
Do you like ‘human’ names for your pets, or something traditionally used for dogs?
Don’t forget that this is a name you will be no doubt calling out several times a day, or even shouting at the top of your voice (remember Fenton, the dog who chased the deer in Richmond park?! Have a look on YouTube!).
Dog names do trend just like human baby names, so no doubt you’ll hear influences from latest films or TV series.
Remember these points as you make your choices, the name will be with pooch for life, and you are going to have to say it on repeat. Shorter names tend to be more effective than longer ones – we prefer two syllable names, but short, monosyllabic names work too. Think about your dog being able to respond to that name when you want his attention.
It might be a good idea to get together a list and narrow it down to just a few. That’s what we like to do, then put it to the whole family and choose ‘the one’.
Rather than making a list of hundreds, we’ve surfed and sifted and filtered out a list of our ‘top 100’ dog names – 50 girls, 50 boys, that we think are pretty pawfect.. As always, let us know what you think!
